Default Trail Conditions 2-22-16

A quick recap of the weekend... HAMMERED. We started out good with a unexpected 1-3" of wet snow across the trail area on Thursday evening, then the rain started. That evening we were just fine and by 6pm Friday things look promising, but the heavy rain moved in a just hammered our trails with 39d temps and lots of water. Saturday, not sure what everyone was thinking, but we had one of the biggest traffic days of the season, with 40d temps and standing water on the trails, about the worst thing that could happen. Corners were blown out, and what snow we had left was formed into long mougles with water holes in between them for all of our system. Off trail we lot 1/2 to 2/3 of our snow pack - it isn't looking good.

Now the better news, we were one of the few clubs that ran groomers on Saturday night, and hit is at just about the perfect time. I was watching temps all weekend and unleashed the green beasts late Saturday night - which made for a very long night for Groomers Nick & Ken (thanks guys). The result? Sunday morning things were mostly tightened up, all of the slush out there was groomed perfect smooth, wide, flat and crazy fast. The soft mougles flowed into the water holes, and with the late run very little traffic hurt the trail before it set up. A almost perfect base is out there, thinner then before, but still there nonetheless. The bad news is we lost the RR grade in Hay Lake and Moran, which means leaving St. Ignace, trail #2, North of #471 isn't usable, you will have to use the West side of the lower loop, #471 which is in good shape. Town trail also took a decent hit, you have some pavement to the downtown shell, and the Mac Bridge connector to US-2 has some gravel shoulder riding now.

You need to remember that we currently have about zero cooling snow on the base, which if it isn't ice is very hard pack. The good news is except for a 33d Wednesday during the day, we are looking at teens and 20s for the foreseeable future, we just need decent snow to top things off and back to excellent conditions. Right now they are ridable, but crunchy and icy - basically mid March riding, not mid-Feb riding. The forecast is calling for a little snow late week, and there is a fairly big storm predicted for downstate on Wednesday night, lets see if Detroit shares some of the snow.

Remember this Saturday is the Bent Ski Classic - snowmobile adventure run. A fun twist on the old poker run. Come check it out: http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub...ead.php?t=1776

If you are looking for a mom & pop motel 30 minutes West of Iggy, check out Groomer Bob's place: http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub...ead.php?t=1769

That is all for now, we are in much better shape then I had thought, lets hope that we get a few inches to top things aff and get it going again. All we need is 2-3" of decent snow and we will be rocking and rolling.
