Default Mackinac Island Ice Bridge 2015

The treeline went up on 2-05-15 by the island residents. A few sleds have crossed here and there. I also heard from a Great Lakes Air pilot that there was open water on both sides of the 'bridge' when they made the first crossing on Tuesday.

It appears that everything is frozen between the island and Iggy now, but it is tough to tell from shore. I did talk to a guy who was in the plane yesterday, and he said that the East side of the Island, and also on the North side are all open water. That means if you were to get lost off the treeline, is is very dangerous.

Use your own judgement, know the dangers of riding over the big lake, let someone know your plan and please be safe. The Straits Area Snowmobile Club, its members, nor any government agency endorses the ice crossing to Mackinac Island.

If you are riding on Mackinac Island, stick to the main roads, trail are not open to sleds, and watch your speed. THEY ARE WRITING TICKETS. Stick to 20MPH while on Island. I heard about a local worker getting a $100 ticket for 8 mph over yesterday. Also, they are enforcing the helmet and trail sticker laws on the Island now.

Not trying to scare yo away, but know the rules before you go over, and while there, BE COOL!

Thanks for the update!

Is there a way to get sleds over without taking the ice bridge? I'd really like to check out the island, but from what has been posted, it sounds like the ice bridge is pretty risky. Please let me know.

Thanks!

Check the island out in the summer months. I don't care how thick the ice is, I still wouldn't cross. I did it once when I was young and dumb and was scared the whole way. Never again.

No open water out there right now. The snow looks to have smoothed the path somewhat. The stream of sleds heading to the island has picked up over the last few days.

Forecast for the next 4 days is ZERO degrees. That will make even more ice.

Crossing ice is never safe, but it is much better then it was last week.

Any updates on the ice bridge condition? We are planning to come up there early Saturday morning and were hoping to be able to cross. I assume with the cold its getting use, but no one has posted any pictures or videos recently, so I wanted to check before we come up.

Also, I've ridden in western UP, but never the eastern end. Are the trails comparable?

Thanks!

The trails in the Eastern U.P are always outstanding, especially around the St. Ignace area.

The Ice Bridge is getting a lot of traffic. The tree line went up February the 6th and it has been bitter cold everyday since.

Please keep in mind that you are using the Ice Bridge at your own risk. No Club, Coast Guard, DNR, or any Government Agency will tell you that it is safe.
Ice conditions can change quickly.

Now that I have put the fear of God in you I will tell you I crossed it last weekend and will be crossing again next weekend.

No--We will be in Curtis on the 25th through March 1st.

We will be there with a group of 12. My Sons and I plan to ride to St. Ignace and over to the Island either on Friday or Saturday.

Trees went up February 6th and it has been bitter cold ever since.

Lots of traffic on the Ice Bridge. Use caution always.

Forecast is showing that it will stay cold for the weekend. What do people expect the condition of the ice bridge to be? How much non sled traffic is there? Walkers, skiers, etc..

Thanks

Although conditions can change rapidly, people will be crossing into mid-March.

Those on this board should know this but I will re-iterate, you never ever cross to Mackinac Island from South of the Bridge, unless you are no longer interested in living. Got reports, then verified that indeed a group of both sledders, and 'fat tire' bikes crossed from Mackinaw City, unknowingly a few hours after the coast guard escorted a freighter through the straits. This didn't seem to be a problem until last year, so don't know what changed, but people need to help get the word out - or darwin will just thin the herd I guess.

Always cross on the designated treeline, and always check the local ice conditions.

Earlier that morning:

Crossed the bridge twice last week and it was beautiful. Passed a man walking over talking on his cell phone. What a sight. He was about halfway over and did not even have a hat on with 7 degree temps. The trails around St. Ignace and Trout Lake were fantastic to say the least. You guys are doing a fabulous job, best in the U.P.!!!!

This is totally unreal. I heard about that this weekend and was blown away.

I seen those fat tire bikes and cross country skiers go over on Sat while we were golfing. Bet that ride back with the wind in their face wasn't fun.
