Default Trail Conditions 1-14-15

Looks like we are settling into that mid-January pattern where it warms up and we get no snow. Forecast for the coming week isn't good for the trails, it is supposed to touch 32 on Saturday, and be upper 20s with really no new snow until next week sometime.

Overall trails are in pretty good shape. Remember all of the snow so far this season is dry lake effect, so it is packing down thin. Speaking of, there are really only 2 really tin areas to worry about, and they are the same every year, the mile RR Grade next to Hay lake, just North of Iggy, and the 2 miles of the grade just South of Moran. Other then that things are in pretty decent shape for what we have to work with, and the great news is the water hole South of Trout Lake is frozen over, so no hazard there.

So for this coming weekend, trails will be ridable - mid-early season conditions. There are currently trailers in the parking lot. You can ride out of Iggy and will find those couple little issues. You can certainly trailer further North if you feel the need.

I understand that TASA has reached Epoufette, and halfway to Trout Lake. The Chasers are grooming into the North side of Trout Lake, trails ridable going North. We are NOT grooming our Cedarville connector, as Cedarville is not grooming yet, so we will concentrate on our core system for now, and will groom that up starting next week.

Some groomer candy from Randy's last run:

Two questions--

Our group will be at the Budget Host 4-5-6-7 February.

Can you get to the Casino by sled, and if you are able, is there a connector off trail 2 to get there?

Can you get to Timmy Lees and that area via a connector or do you have to Navigate along side of U.S 2

I appreciate and thank you for any help

Don

Casino - ride out trail 2 to the first trail intersection, turn right. This is not an office trail, but an unplowed road, follow Castle Rock Road to the end, and cross over I-75, and ride the side of Mackinac Trail to the Casino. If there is ice, it is much easier to just ride from downtown out along the shore, but we don't have ice as of yet.

Timmy's is a bit tougher. Ride to the US-2 shell station, being the Mackinac Bridge snowmobile pickup location, cross US-2, ride behind the carwash and Bigboy to the golf course entrance. Take that and ride the golf course to the West, and you can again cross US-2 at Timmy's

O.K. Thank you. I didn't know you could ride the ice to the Casino.

Info appreciated.

If you ride out on the golf course, be careful. There are some hidden ravines and water. We have ridden it to Timmy's before.

Couple trailers in the parking lot. Saw a group of touring sleds this morning. The first big group, or really destination riders I have seen this season.

Friday morning update.

From the groomer and riders last night: Tings are pretty good along the RR grade out of Iggy, very little issue, and only the thin spot along Hay Lake which is manageable. The sleds rode up to Trout Lake and the open area 1 1/2 miles long from M-123 to the South side of Moran is very very very thin. There are local shortcuts to get around it, so if you find yourself there, look for the tracks.

All of the other trails should be in good overall condition and perfectly ridable. Base should be between 4-10", with the deeper stuff up North. Early season conditions, so if riding off trail watch for those sticks and stumps.

Other then that, we had a good meeting last night with a few new guys interested, so looking good there.

It is going to warm up tomorrow, then cool back off on Sunday. Not sure what 30d will do to the trails at this point, they may get a bit tore up. Also, if we loose too much not sure when the groomers will run again - they are on-call for temps and snow at this point. Mother nature will have to cooperate a bit as usual.

I know that you can't see the larger version of the picture, but check out the neat ice/bridge pic in this weeks paper, it is a pretty rare sight: http://www.stignacenews.com/

Enjoy your weekend!

Another text just came in, and I will say that even though we are rated good, most of the system would be very-good, and double groomed areas bordering on excellent. Just the couple problem areas holding us back.

I have ridden all over the U.P and I can say that the Straits Area grooming efforts are head and shoulders above everyone else.

A big thank you to all the men and women that go above and beyond to make the trails safe and fun to ride..

Quick weekend update.
Wow. Quite a bit of traffic out there. Trails got rather chopy for the amount of Snow that we have. Mostly due to the warm afternoon temps. We tried to run the groomers last night with mixed results. The town groomer did make the lower loop reporting decent results with riders reporting some more rocks on the rr grade. The Brevort groomer did the south half of the north loop and aborted the rest. The trail would not lay flat and it was 37d with light rain. The really bad thing about it is we could not get Trout Lake done And I
found out that they are logging the cafey trail on the way to Rexton. I recommend avoiding that trail until we can get a couple grooms on it.

This morning it is 35d and the hourly forecast is near freezing temps all day and not starting to get cold until late tonight. We will try to get a run in tonight but with the temps and low snow any grooming during the day it's going to hurt more then it will help. Mother Nature isn't helping us at all again this year.
