Default Trail Conditions 3-13-14

What more could you ask for in the middle of March? Deep base, temps just below freezing for the weekend, and well - perfect trails.

If you followed the weather in the beginning of the week, you would find that it got warm, alot warmer then people expected, bet depending on who you asked we saw official temps at 42d, but possibly as high as 46d. The results were very very soft trails. That actually worked out ok, as we went out while it was warm both Monday and Tuesday nights and groomed all the soft snow and smashed out the mougles, woops and corner ramps that got pretty high over the weekend. Things flash froze very very hard on Wednesday night and right now everything is like a perfect highway out there.

The warm weather gave us a little preview of what is to come later in the month, namely some slush holes, and tore-up trails. With the base as deep as it is, as things start to melt you are going to find areas where the water has no place to go, and it is going to make some slush holes, maybe some really big ones. We expect that the water over RR Grade issue near Trout Lake from the beginning of the season will be back as well, that is why we left the signs up. Not much we can do about that stuff except fill them in as best we can... which we did on Tuesday.

Right now everything is frozen over and looking fantastic. This weekend the temps are going to be in 15-25, and that will hold tings out perfect. Friday is supposed to get up to 38, with maybe a little snow in the evening. If we get a bunch of traffic then trails may get tore up on Friday, which will be fixed on Friday night, it will freeze down well, and we will be all set for the weekend.

Trails out of town are fantastic, town trails took some abuse as roads are starting to get bare. Everything is still accessible with a minimal amount of pavement. I will update that as it gets warmer.

Some odds and ends:
The treeline to Mackinac Island is still being used. Proceed with caution, and check local conditions, and NEVER EVER cross the ship track South of Mackinac Island. The only 'safe' crossing is between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. Enter the ice across from the dwntown Shell station.

The City of St. Ignace would like to remind people that you can not ride on Main Street, including the sidewalks.

A HUGE congrats to the Lady Saints High School basketball team. They are off to the final 4 tonight to play a team that they barely beat for the championship 2 years ago. If they win, on to the finals on Saturday. Good luck in Lansing girls!

Now, time for some Thursday trail candy. Groomer Bob provided all of these pics from the core of the system on his last groom. No issues out there at all, and it shows fantastic riding conditions. 3 official weekends left in the season - head on UP!

It is overcast this morning, with will help keep things a bit crunchy and frozen up. Temps are hovering right around 32d right now, and are expected to reach a high of 35d. That will not hurt things one bit. Time to get out and put some miles down!

A HUGE CONGRATS to the Lady SAINTS who are going the the championship basketball class C game down in Lansing Saturday.

Last person out of St. Ignace please turn out the lights!

It got warmer on Friday then it was supposed to. It rained a decent amount North of us. Trails glazed over in areas, and are in great shape in others. A couple of minor slush holes to deal with.

Today it is 15d with bright sun and fantastic riding. The 1" of snow we got last night was perfect for sled cooling, and topped off a flat trail. From Iggy out to Castle Rock Rd, the first intersection will be the worst part of the trail. The traffic and base condition are proving difficult to keep it flat. Get out and enjoy it while it lasts. We have had no appreciable snow yet in March, and the trails are still great. Ride them while you can.

I fixed up the downtown trail last night, it is in good shape with only about 200' of pavement. Coming from the lower, using the US-2 Shell trail, you are going to have about 2 blocks total of pavement issues. I tried but can't help you on that.
