Default Trail Conditions 2-27-14

Super COLD is what it is. Lots of things closed down again today as the air temp is not supposed to reach even 0 today. Single digits tomorrow, with low teens on Saturday and back to single for Sunday. Some of that kind of cold is dangerous so make sure that you dress right, and more important have a buddy or an emergency plan if you are driving or riding in this severe cold.

Yep, the weather is super cold. The trails are super good though. Last 2 grooms the drivers reports trails are back into that classic fantastic shape. We did get 1-2" of snow lasts night, and what you will need to look out for is the drifting. We have areas that are drifting shut 12 hours after grooming, so watch the open areas, specifically on the Truck Trail, and the RR Grade in Moran - but any open area will have that potential. Both groomers are running good and covering their trails on schedule, and are supposed to run all weekend.

Sorry, no trail pics today... I'm not going outside today unless I have to! I will collect some over the weekend, and catch you up next week.

Happy trails.

COLD COLD COLD COLD. Schools are closed for the second day just due to temps. NOAA Said that we should hit -24d by 5am this morning, well I was not up, but I think we got there, the following shots are from the groomer (which always reads 5 or 6d high) and Waynes truck on the ride home last night, all before 1 am.

Default Cheboygan & other area problems:

I just talked to teh Cheboygan club to offer our assistance, but they have a snowblower coming in to fix things, and should be all set by tomorrow afternoon.

Quote:
Portions of snowmobile trails in Cheboygan, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm and Ottawa
counties will not be groomed until drifting snow can be managed

Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials announced today that various sections of snowmobile trails in Cheboygan, Kent, Mecosta, Montcalm and Ottawa counties will not be groomed due to the extremely large snow drifts blocking the trails. The affected sections of snowmobile trails include:
Trail #9 from Cheboygan to Mackinaw City, and sections of Trail #9 on the east side of Mullet Lake;
Trail #5 in parts of Kent, Mecosta and Montcalm counties, from Polk Road to Russell Road; and
Trail #19 in Ottawa County and Ravenna Township.
Snow drifts as high as 5 feet to 8 feet tall are making it impossible for the grooming equipment to lay down a smooth trail surface. Current grooming equipment is designed to smooth out the trail surface, and not designed for plowing through tightly compacted snow drifts.

The DNR and local snowmobile clubs are looking at options to break through the drifts, including bringing in heavy equipment such as front-end loaders and backhoes to remove the drifts.

Grooming will commence once trails are sufficiently cleared to allow the grooming equipment to run without getting stuck. Snowmobilers are urged to either avoid these sections of trail, or use extreme caution if riding in these drifted areas.

Questions may be directed to Todd Neiss, DNR trails specialist, at 231-775-9727 ext. 6045. Information regarding other snowmobile riding opportunities may be found on the DNR’s website at www.michigan.gov/snowmobiling.

When we puller into the house in Moran Late Thurs night the truck read -36. It was a bit chilly. It was crazy listening to all the trees crack that night.

The ice chip scramble was a great time as usual and Great job to the Cheboygan brewing company for stepping up and sponsoring the event. We had a blasxt and the gallon jug for winning was tasty
