I'm hoping no news is good news here....

We're coming up this weekend for a life-long dream to ride on Mackinac Island. Everybody, please keep doing your ice bridge dance for us!

Thanks.

Ice bridge looks to be in good condition and continues to be used daily. Check local conditions before using, and DO NOT CROSS the ship track on the South side of Mackinac Island, stick to the treeline.

Just thought you may like to know that there were a few sleds that crossed this morning... the 100th day of ice bridge this season.

Still ice out as far as I can see. Rumor has it the USCG will be around on the 17th to break up the bridge, but then again the paper also said they had 4 cutters working around the Soo with 47 ships waiting at the locks. Also hear the Mackinaw is the only ting in the area with enough power to get into our harbor right now.

In Bay City a cutter was going to breakup the ice at the mouth of the river. But they keep calling if off for some reason.

Last update to this thread. The last sleds crossed from Mackinac Island on Monday April 14th. Rumor has it the 'old timers' can remember April 17th as the latest crossing, so very close to the unofficial record.

Tuesday a section of open water opened up on the West side of the island, but there is still a ton of ice out there, and in fact on the North side it is still frozen out to the horizon.

The cutter Mackinaw is scheduled to be here on Friday, I guess we will see if she can open things up some. Thing is there is no place for the ice to go right now, so it may not really do any good.

Hard to believe there is still that much ice on the lakes in mid-April. Meanwhile, 430 miles south there are farmers gearing up to start planting crops early next week if the rain holds off.

The USCG Ice breaking mission that was supposed to happen last Friday is pushed to the 25th at the earliest. Some open water around the bridge, and a little off the Grand, but ice as far as I can see on the North side and everywhere else still isn't broken yet.

Wink--Thanks for the article. My wife is supposed to go to a Library conference on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel the end of April.

Looks like a crap shoot at this point unless she flies over.

I knew you already saw it on the other forum. Just thought it was interesting and should be on the Straits forum. Hope she gets to make the trip.
