Default Brushing & Signing 2012

This thread is your one stop shop for Bushing & signing 2012.

Straits Area Snowmobile Club will be doing fall maintenance on Saturday October 13th & Saturday October 20th.
Discounts are available at the Super 8 & Budget Host motels on those nights for those helping work.

With all the work planned, if a hurricane is forecasted, I will entertain postponing to another weekend.

Our plan is to do major signing, with minor brushing work on all 101 miles of trail. We will have enough equipment to run 4 signing crews at the same time, so a group of over 20 people can be accommodated. The groomer will be out doing fall brushing work as well. There are also 2 bridges that need railings that may be worked on those weekends as well.

Since signing regulations are changing this year I hope everyone can attend a pre-work day breakfast to eat and go over the signing manual - we want to get this right the first time so it is easier in years to come.

We work hard, then we will play hard and have dinner afterwords at a local tavern.

I also got a new smaller signing trailer we will need to setup before hand, so if there is anyone in the St. Ignace area that wants to help that fixed up in the coming weeks let us know.

Lets get a roll call going and see who we will partying or um, working with.

New signing regs are a big part of the work this season. Gone are a bunch of the yellow warning signs.
Removed SIgns.jpg

In is a new signing manual that is going to make a lot of the trails, trail riding. People are going to have to ride what they can see, not the signs, as most curves will not be signed. Turns, are where someone could follow a different path and not get from point a to point be, will be signed. We will be adding a bunch of confidence markers too.

A link to the handbook for those interested to read up a bit:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dn...2_381136_7.pdf

I am hearing that inspections will be kinda tough this year so that all of the trails across the state are uniform, so we gotta get it right.

Attaching an updated card...

Is it strange that I have a real craving to MUNCH some trees?

FYI: All the saws, pole-saws and augers are serviced and ready to go. And a new auger is on the way.

Not sure who is coming with me what weekend. Probably Griz one weekend and Floyd the other weekend. I'm trying to get my son up to help one weekend.

So I spent all last night at the preseason meeting in Newberry. Confirmed quite a few things about the new signing standard. The one word that I walked away with was consistency. There may be a few special cases of things across the state, but overall the trails will be signed very consistent (or we will be doing it again). Signs warning or 'corners' which is defined as a bend in the trail with no options of 'turns' will not be signed with warning signs. A 'turn' is defined as a place in the trail where a rider could possibly get confused as to what direction that could go. Those will be marked. Off the top of my head, we will only have 3-5 'turns' marked on our entire 101 mile trail system. Basically, we will be marking trails for point A to point B so people don't get lost - but it is their responsibility to ride safely between those points.

I will have to cover this all before guys head out to work, so if you can possibly make breakfast before going to work, please do.

We will be meeting at the Truck Stop for Breakfast at 7:00 AM for a 45 minute breakfast, then getting loads at the Super 8 at 8:00 AM and hitting the trails hard all day.

Neil,
Wife and I will be up mid-afternoon on fri.the 12. If you need to work on the other sign trailer, we can help out. I am driving the truck for this trip, if we need to use it.

At this point in time, I will not be able to make the trail prep this year. If something changes I will be there! I really enjoy working on the trails and seeing everyone, it just does not look like I can make it.

Thanks Kevin. Not sure how many people we will end up with. Planning on doing final prep on Friday night. Jimmy has been out of town, so I am not sure if the second trailer is going to be usable by then or not. We may need more trucks just to haul the removed signs & posts.

Dave ran the brusher up to Moran yesterday. Boy I forget how much work that thing gets done!

Neil,

Did you get a final head count for both weekends? I had planned on the 20th and it looks like maybe more people will be up on the 20th. Does that look like the weekend that most of the work will be done or do you still plan on both weekends of the same work. Just wondering if I should try to change my plans to the 13th.

I would rather be up when the majority of the work will be done and the BIGGEST PARTY with the guys.

I rode the trails this past Sunday and they were great!

I will say though, when I was in Seney at the Veterans Ride this past weekend and attended the Party in the Groomers Barn, It sure was nice to have that space for the club...hint hint.

Pat

I may have to backpeddle on my thoughts of coming UP both weekends. As of now none of my other partners in crime can make it this weekend. With the price of fuel for a 900 mile round trip, I just can't justify coming UP by myself. The way it stands now, I will only make it for the 20th. Sorry.

OK, this goes against my better judgment, and I really apologize for those that have made plans for helping out this weekend, but I am going to cancel this weekends work secessions. The weather is forecasted for a nasty system this weekend, and more importantly, we don't have our sign order yet. Thats right, put in the paperwork last April, and no one has signs yet. The company called and scheduled delivery for Monday. I am running low on what signs I have, and need a bunch of the new types of signs, so anything we did this weekend would have to be gone over again to get the correct signs up. The only thing I could see doing is brushing work.

We are going to hit it hard on the 20th, and either add the 27th or the 10th of November (or both) if we have some people that those weekends work out better for. We we have a decent crew for the 20th, so if you can make one weekend only, then please look at the 27th.

Jimmy and I are going to get some work on the trailers done this weekend, and someone will be in the brusher for sure. Grading is about done until deer season is over, or the frost is hitting hard.

It is always interesting around here, thanks to everyone who help out with everything you do. We could not do it without you!

Thanks for the update! I will stick with the 20th. Forgot to mention that the grading was very nice and I really liked what you did with my road (Ozark)...very smooth.
