Default Trail Conditions 3-14-19

3.1415926536

Whether it be apple, cherry or mathematical, Happy PI day!

This time of the year, I am usually saying that trails are icy and rideable and we will squeak a weekend out. So, kinda the same, but not. So if you have not been watching the news, there is basically a winter hurricane running through the plains, and we are going to be on the warm side of it. It rained for the last 24 hours, and it is gonna rain for the next 24 hours too. All told I think we will get about 3/4in out of this system, so not a crazy amount of water, but when everything is frozen and blocked up, it may make the roads and stuff kinda fun.

We lost about 4in of snow last night, and I expect with todays 40-45d temps and rain we will loss another 6in. We currently have 2-3 ft of base on all of the trails, even into the towns, so it will not be a big deal to lose some snow. In fact, I will predict that we will EASILY be riding into April this year.

So we currently have a groom scheduled for 11 or so on Friday night. Time will be adjusted and it may not happen at all depending on temps and water Wayne is going to ride Friday afternoon to determine the best course of action. The result on Saturday will all likely be a hard brick out there, but is should be smooth. If not Saturday, then after Saturday nights groom it will be a ice cube on Sunday morning, but again it should be amazing trails. We are discussing ways to get some loose stuff on top for cooling.

So, make those reservations, and plans, but keep some time in the bank cause you can ride for weeks yet out of iggy.

I will post up some pics when I get new ones that show current conditions.

FYI, the DNR issued a memo before the season began - there will never be grooming extensions granted again. No exceptions. Hell of a year to come up with that rule.

Now some Mackinac Island Info from someone I know and trust:

PSA REGARDING ICE CROSSING

While the following information is well known by locals , I wanted to pass on some information to our out of town friends.

The ice-bridge is not sanctioned or regularly checked for safety or stability by any entity or organization. It is cross at your own risk at all times.

Lately I have heard some remarks and posts on non-local FB pages that "if the trees are up it's good."

Nothing could be further from the truth.

As the temperatures rise and conditions worsen, the danger compounds itself. NOBODY has and NOBODY will put out signs and, or, take down the trees to indicate the ice is compromised.

Just because you see a tree line as you pull into St. Ignace does not mean the conditions are suitable for crossing. The locals know when to quit for the year and who to ask for current conditions.

There is no public authority that will comment or condone crossings, particularly as the weather and conditions deteriorate.

Thank you and please exercise good judgment and caution as spring like temperatures continue.

Jason St. Onge,
Chief, Mackinac Island Fire Department
I will add that I have seen years where 3/4 of the treeline moves a mile or more as the ice breaks up.

The crossing will still be used for some time. PLEASE check local conditions before you venture out.

Only issue at all will be First Street up to the US2 shell. Will try to fix it up some, but can't do much with bare pavement and huge snowbanks.

We would love to get one more ride in. But I think were done. Did not have much $$ in my snowmobile fund this year Plus we are done to one income so $$ is tight. So, those of you still riding be safe.

Here is your Friday morning report:

No school again yesterday in Iggy. THey tried, but the roof caved in at the high school locker rooms. No injuries, but quite a mess.

Iggy and Epoufette lost about a foot of snow. Still 2 feet on the level. Moran and Trout Lake settled about 6in or so. It didn't rain nearly as much as they thought it would, and the temps are about 8d colder than predicted. New forecast now has us at or below freezing all day today - and right through Tuesday where it is going to be warm during the day, and begin the slow snow death.

Wayne is riding the trails right now, he reports near perfect trails from Moran to Epoufette. Zero water, trail is hard, but not an ice cube. Traffic today will scratch up lube snow for sure.

Wayne's plan is to run the groomers late tonight to take any chatter out and scratch it up a little on top. Should have great conditions this weekend.

Not as of right now. It may be a bit harder in the morning, but it is NOT solid ice. The water drained through the snow, and it is STILL a softer consistency like we have been dealing with all season.

Eventually, if we get like a week of 40d temps with no night freezing, we may be dealing with 16-30in of mashed potatoes. But it is all good right now.

Afternoon update for the St. Ignace Area.

Wayne is out over-achieving again. All the lower trails are groomed up and there are no issues to report. All snow, no major ice, zero issues, trails board flat.

Now, how much snow do we have left over?

Well here is a couple of pics to illustrate that. This is Round Lake Road, a few miles NW of Iggy. This is a regular standard shovel, with an unbroken handle. You see the depth of soft snow on the trail? Look at it just outside of the groomed surface!

THIS IS WHY THE GROOMER DOES NOT MOVE OVER!!! It is also why I think we will be grooming on March 31, and you will be riding after that too.
