Default Trail Conditions 1-24-19

Just a quick update and I will do more later.

Over the last couple of days we received over a foot of new snow. Non of it is really packy, some sugar, some light, some just strange.

Groomers are running, and there are zero problems in the trails, all rated very good condition. The concern now is to get it all packed down, as it seems like loose snow. The smooth trails may get bumpy with use until we can get it all packed and froze down.

Temps this weekend are going to go back down to single digits. Be aware that if the temps drop to -10s, I will cancel groomer runs to same people and equipment, but other than that we should be running every day.

Be safe, be courteous, and if you see a groomer get out of his way please.

Thanks. Trail conditions just keep getting better. Neil do you think there is a chance we will have a tree line ice bridge to the Island this winter ?

It is currently froze all the way to Mackinac Island. There is also 12" of new snow on top of that thin ice, hampering the formation somewhat. I am guessing there will be an ice bridge looking at the forecasted temps over the next 10 days.

NOTICE:
Everything was groomed up on Thursday night. The Northern trails should be groomed Friday & Saturday nights. I am looking for a driver on the SOuthern loop for tonight. I lost a driver, and another is out of town, so a bit short handed right now. It is unlikely the cedarville connector will be groomed before mid-next week, so if you want to try busting some powder, you can run that trail for aways.
I will update if I can get someone lined up.

Big thanks to Groomer Dave. He is going to take an extra run tonight, so Iggy will be groomed. Cedarville connector likely will still be powder though.

Saturday the 26th. All I can say is wow. I have always passed up St Ignace just like so many others to ride north and west. What a mistake. Today's ride out of St. Ignace was probably one of the nicest and smoothest rides I have had in 10 years. Maybe being a little bit stingy, but I hope all others keep going north and west as I will be in St Ignace enjoying the great trails with a lot less traffic. Thank you groomers and the snowmobile clubs.

Kudos to you and the crew Neil, we rode a good stretch of Iggy trails today in our loop. Rexton to Cedarville (via Caffey, Ozark, Burma), Kinross, Soo, Brimley, Paradise, Newberry then back home. All trails were good for the most part but the Straights trail system was at the head of the pack, great job!!

Thank you for the feel-goods there guys. I will pass them on.

Again, I always credit the groomer drivers, they are the ones building the snow roads out there.

A big thumbs up to groomer Dave who has stepped up and run out of Iggy 3 times in 5 days. He called me and expressed displeasure that Cedarville trail was not fully groomed yet, so he took the tractor and headed that way on what will in all likely be a 9 hour run this afternoon.

How far up the Cedarville connector does the Straits Club do? It was fine, still flat under the fresh snow except for along Mac Tr.

Straits grooms to M-134 where it crosses over I-75, a few miles south of the snowmobile bridge over I-75.

Like Todd said, we groom to M-134.

Trails were in good (ungroomed) shape because we groomed them when it was warmish, and before the last big storm. One of the ways we keep things in good shape in low snow years.

There was one person that crossed on a sled Friday. I don't think he rode back.
On the same day, there was also the 'regular group' of first crossers which checked the crossing. They ware life jackets, and tie 3 guys together with 100ft of rope and ice spud the whole way checking ice depths. They only made a few hundred feet off Mackinac Island with the ice spuds going through in one hit. They report ice is way too thin and alot of what they called snow ice.

There is 12" of fluffy snow over ice that was there only 3 days before the snow. That does not equate to good ice formation.

With the big storm that is rolling all of Michigan today, no need for trail condition report.

Suffice to say it is cold. Dave groomed Cedarville connector, and lower loop last evening, and the pic he sent was -19f on the bank clock downtown when he got home. My plow will barely crank on a newer battery.

Hunker down, snuggle up. Even Mackinac Island schools is closed today with a storm that is only predicted to bring 5in today for us, but with the high temp of -2f and the 35mph winds it is not fit for man nor beast out there.

Thanks, Todd - that's what I thought, but wasn't sure. Our Camp is off Mac Tr about 8 miles UP from the bridge

Thumbs up Re: Trail Conditions 1-24-19

I rode tip of the mitt Saturday, it was -24F air temp on our way across Black Lake in the morning. I ended up with a bit of freezer burn on my left cheek!

Still managed to put on 350 miles of cold riding over the weekend!

We hit -7f in Rexton before it started dropping again, didn't leave the house much. Took my nephew out for a quick spin off trail but both our shields were frosting over even with electric shields. Has been snowing lightly all day over here, maybe 2" of new snow.
