Default Trail Conditions 3-27-08

What can I say, but for March the trails can't get any better then they are now. Everything has had a fresh groom in the last 48 hours, which is plenty with the traffic that is out there right now. I talked to 2 different groups of guys that just got back for riding out of the ice rink lot, one went to the Soo, the other went almost to Paradise. Both said that there is nothing to worry about out on the trails, except getting through the towns, which is expected.

It got a lot warmer then forecasted, and I expected yesterday. The RR grade out of town turned rather slushy, much more then I would have expected. It got a fresh groom while it was warm, so is froze nice and smooth last night. That is also a bit of an issue to think about. The RR grade is going through a freeze/thaw cycle most days right now. It will get a bit slushy in the afternoon, and is rock hard in the mornings, which means a bit of ice on this trail. This is mostly just for the trail from St. Ignace, out 4 miles to the junction of the castle rock road trail (#471). Everything else is pretty much good to go. There is some problems along the sides of the roads, and getting into towns. I would not currently recommend riding up to US-2, lots of pavement on that route, but you can actually ride downtown for fuel in St. Ignace without too much trouble.

Overall, our trails are in very good condition, and I fully expect to see that last through the weekend. The base ranges from 4-6 inchs on the RR grade, to 16-24 inches in the woods trails. Time to squeeze in one last ride this season. Time to head to the UP!

Thursday is usually picture day, here is a couple of pics just outside of St. Ignace from last night. You can see that they have had a fresh groom, and are a bit soft. Since then these have frozen solid.

Here are a few more pics from the junction of RR Grade and Castle Rock road (#471) Things look great here, with lots of smooth snow going on. Note: I would NOT recommend driving castle rock road to this junction, especially with a trailer. It is not plowed, and very tough going at this time. We will try to make sure that it get plowed again next season.

10-4 on the not driving to Castle Rock road. We drove out there the week before Christmas and almost didn't make it out. And it only got deeper after that.

As reported just a little while ago by Don Reed, MSA from the Seney area, via his trail report:

Quote:
Season is Extended!
It's official. We got word from the DNR today that our request to extend the season was approved. This covers the whole UP but not the lower peninsula. The extension is good until 6 April and then they will reassess the snow conditions again. We have talked to Grand Marais, TASA, and Curtis. They will also be grooming as weather permits through the extension. I am not sure about the rest of the UP. You'll have to check out their trail reports.
We have not received 'official' notification as of yet. Right now, I imagine that we will schedule at lease 2 grooms for next week. One to fix this weekends damage, and one to prep the trails for next weekend.

Its hard to believe only 8 hours away you got that much snow. Hit 65 degrees yesterday here in Indianapolis.

8 hrs, heck to go just 1 to 1.5 hours South and they don't have nearly the snow we do. And we don't have as much as those North of M-28. They may have snow until May!

Gonna be passing thru Saturday evening. Going UP with a few guys from work, dropping at the ice rink Sat am. Going to ride to Cedarville, then to the Soo, then Brimley, run the bay to the Casino, then to Raco. From there, UP thru Silver Creek, back on the Bay to Paradise, down the falls trail and back to the south trail to Silver Creek. From there to Hulbert down North Hulbert road, to Trout Lake, then stop at the Rock Bottom. Should be pretty good everwhere except on North Hulbert road the last few miles into town where you have to ride the bank.

Yeah, the last few miles on the bank are not too bad though. I was down that last Sat. Still should be good.

I am simply coming up in the capacity of consulting. I have been told that Kenny has strayed from the path of Barley and Malt. I was contacted by a VIP at a major brewing concern and hired in that capacity. My mission, should I decide to accept it, is to try and prompt Mr. Hall to correct his course and steer back to the correct path. I know this a huge burden for any single man to try and accomplish. But, "A man's gotta doo what a man's gotta doo". Any and all help would be appreciated. And that's all I've got to say about that.

Here is our route for Saturday in grey. Headed for the Falls Pub for lunch first, then back home thru Raco, etc. There are currently 3 of us. The two guys with me will be riding 08 Doos. If anyone wants to join UP, we'll be leaving the ice rink around 9 am. The plan is to be at the Rock Bottom before dark. As you can tell by the route, it will be a moderately fast ride.

I'll help when we come thru in the evening but I've got a funny feeling it will be "mission accomplished" by that time, if not earlier.

We'll be on the sleds when we "hit Rock Bottom". If you're not there, I'll call your cell. If you guys are at Timmy's, we'll put em' on the trailer and drive over and have a few. We'll get together either way. Have a safe drive UP.
