Default Trail Conditions 1-17-08

It has been really cold and the trails are hard packed like crazy. They are in super shape right now. Check out this link for more info and pics:
http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub...read.php?t=677

We have a groomer down right now, and it has been sent to Big Rapids for repair. That being said, we are still running a full grooming schedule, hot seating groomer #5, for 20 hours straight, 4 hours rest, then rightback it, until further notice.

Also: The treeline to the island went up today. Some sleds are crossing, and that is all I will say about that. Check local conditions. and travel at your own risk.

Neil When crossing the ice to the Island on the tree line how far is it in miles if you know?

And also do you think it would be wise to wear a life jacket?

My brother famousguy and I were thinking of taking a shot at it.

Thanks Pro

NO Pro,

I have crossed that ice before with the Legend. We did that back in the late eighties and ate lunch on the island at the Mustang.

The Legend and I had our first 400 mile day that day. We rode 411 miles. From Blueberry Hill to Mackinaw Island and then back to Cedarville where we stayed overnight.

famousguy with a U. Its no1 pro here with a 1, you know the number 1 that goes and fits between the o and the p in my name.

Well anyhow Josephine would with out a dought ask maybe even yell is this really necessary before she went out on that ice, and my guess is she would not go with the biggest life jacket on earth. I think she would say I will wait here till you get back. If you get back.

No1,

It varies from year to year, but a straight line distance it is just over 3 miles. 2 years ago, they had 2 tree lines, with the South fork called the "B" line. It was made because the first one was so rough, and it went way South, and actually entered the island, right next to downtown, by the school. That one was over 5 miles, and was freaky because it too you way out into the actual straits,

Don't tell Jose that it is ice. Just tell her it is a corn field and maybe she won't know the difference.

Just check conditions before you go. That ice can change overnight from safe to deadly. I know I wouldn't be going over this early even with how cold it has been.

My husband and I have crossed the ice bridge 3 or 4 times in the last few years. Our advise is only cross the bridge when there is heavy traffic going back and forth. Never cross the ice bridge when you don't see any traffic going back and forth. It is really beautiful over there but the bottom line is as my uncle says who lives in the area " The only thing on the island this time of year is an over-priced burgers and beer! So why risk it." If you do decide to go have fun and don't stop!
Good luck.

Pro,

Forget the life jackets. Just hook a big long rope around ya so we can pull you UP from the bottom of the lake LOL

We crossed it last year when there was a ton of traffic going to and from. The bottom line is that it was really neat to ride around the island and the ice was great last year. I would agree that it is a little early for it still and we're going to wait until the end of Feb to do it again.

I have been over on the ice bridge twice, two different times. The wife was over once. Don't need to go again for a long time.

Broken bolt on the planetary where it bolts to the transmission, and some plate rotated, so more bolts were loose, or broken. Something that absolutely should not happen - of course they have no explanation for the cause, and won't fix it here - so they hauled it to Big Rapids, again.

Our friend Jeff (con-fusion), PM'd Neil and offered to bring his brother-in-law up to take a look at it. Mike is probably one of the best Deere mechanics in the state of Ohio. His family owns a dealership in Coldwater, OH. Mike used to be a die hard sledder til his kids got older and got involved in sports. He would love to have an excuse to bring his tools up AND get to ride. He said they never have electrical problems with those units.

Mike is iching for a reason to have to get out of the shop (checked out the size of that new addition yet Wink it's huge), not shure how the old leathers will fit but ready to ride again soon. Tried to explain that things have changed since MACH Z's ruled the trail,he just laughed a and told me if his sister can still ride he thought he could hang. He is also doing some investagating with the JD people this kind of failure drives him crazy. He and Paul Jr said Sat. night this is defenately the exception not the rule.

#6 has shown electrical problems for a long time, I say let Mike work his magic on it. The current dealer servicing the unit can't seem to fix it.
