Default Trail Conditions 2-15-08

I can honestly say that they can't get much better then they are now. Trails are rated in excellent condition, and there are no major problems to report anywhere in our system. Base stands at between 6 and 20 inches, with a very solid ice base under that.

Yesterdays minor storm brought 4-5 inches of fresh stuff to the area. We already have most of that packed down and ready to go. It is supposed to be colder today and tonight, and then get very nice, almost perfect for riding this weekend. The news says they are watching a storm for Sunday night into Monday, so come on up and if you are just lucky enough, you might get caught above the bridge and have an excuse to stay another day!!

Don't forget to head this direction for the Bent Ski Classic. If you like poker runs, you will LOVE this enhanced version, coming to you TOMORROW. Make your reservation and head North today.
Check out more information here: http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub...=2674#post2674

The question is, why are you reading this instead of packing to head this direction? Head on up, come meet me at the trail stop, and prize giveaway at the Bent Ski Classic!

How about a nice pic to wet your appetite:

We will be on the way this afternoon also. The other half of our group got in last night and are out enjoying the trails as we speak.

I just found out a few minutes ago that a required part for the groomer is not available until Monday. Consequently we will continue on with the double shifts with one machine. Please be on the lookout for some daytime grooming until further notice. We should be able to keep up with 85% of the trails each day like before, and the core of the system will be done every day. We were able to keep up with no complaints when we had to do this a few weeks ago, so I do not foresee any major problems other then driver scheduling. Please bare with us through the difficulty.

Can you let us know perhaps which day Cedarville connector will be done this weekend. I've talked up the Straits systems and have visitors coming for first time this weekend, and want to make sure take them thatta way on day it to be done.

Thanks

Dave

Looks like a big storm Sunday into Monday for our area (just before my group gets up there). I'm going to keep dancing and hope it happens AND that you get your groomer back so you guys don't have to hot seat it!

Dave, it should have been done last night, and will be done again either tomorrow morning, or tomorrow night, depending on which way the groomer leaves town in the morning.

Here are some pics from my groomer run this morning 02-17-2008. Had some sleet/frz rain initially up by Trout Lake around 9 this morning, then turned to very heavy snow, occasionally mixing with sleet and frz rain during the rest of the run.

Here are some pics from today out in da woods. Enjoy.

First two pics are from the Carp River Rd. Truck Trail

Next two pics are from the Caffey Trail

Trails are just fantastic right now.

TM,
Thanks for taking the time to post up with the pictures. I'm heading up on Wednesday and was anxious to hear how the storm hit the area.

Thanks again!

There was some ice/freezing rain in St. Ignace, but the trails will hold up just fine.

Good job there Toddmeister. Glad you guys had good riding and grooming. I rode around the thumb on Sat night. Put on 85 miles. Rained most of the day today here at home.

Todat was a crazy dat forsure. We went for a ride this morning and got a call from Wink. I was in Cut river at the time and he said you sure can't be out riding in this and I said are you kidding its snowing like crazy. In St Iggy it was sleeting and raining but out north it snowed like crazy. We got atleast 5" of fresh wet snow. The trails are in excellent shape so come and get it. my wife 2 kinds and I were up friday til Sunday AM trails were super we had a great time. Rode Friday 11-6 and all day Saturday. Our trip home Sunday was a bit hairy we left st. Iggy@ 9:30am just south of the bridge@ mile 317 I looked in my minor to see my trailer and 4 sleds going sideways the glaze of Ice made driving horrible-We spunout and landed in a snowbank all ok no equipment damage either. the first tow truck spunout and I had to wait for the second to pull me out. I spent the next 7 hours going home to Port Huron. Did anyone see the Huge Black Covered trailer that was in the ditch ?, the trailer was a mess I hope nobody was hurt. This all in all was a super time out the trails and we had a great time.We will be back soon . Keep up the great job on the grooming.

Hi Pete - by the sound of it, I think we watched you do the little spinny right in front of us (open bed 4-place - ended up on right side of highway)? And then a little further up, some guy w/2-place covered did same thing, only he ended up on left side, and ended up driving NORTH in left Southbound lane (must have been trying to get back to an exit). Saw the big black hauler in the ditch as well as about 5 semis stopped at the hill at Wolverine (I think). One truck couldn't make it up hill and ended up cross wise across both lanes. They closed I-75 right after we passed to let the trucks try and creep up one at a time. Lotsa cars, trucks, trailers in da ditch. Our 3 hour normal ride was 4 hr / 15 min Sunday.

We left all our stuff at our camp in Rudyard - coming back Thursday night for long weekend "Big Crew" for us this weekend - wife, couple buddies and their wives, and my son.

Hey, I was getting ready to pass that big black trailer just before he lost it. We had just passed a chick in a red blazer, down in the trees, & I looked over at my buddy & wondered how she went off the road. You could not tell it was that icy. We were right behind him, & I noticed the rear of the trailer start to fish-tail, just a couple of inces each way at first.... my buddy said look out he's gonna loose it, & when I hit the brakes I found out we were on an Ice rink, I looked up & it was like slow motion to watch him go into a 270 degree spin into the snow bank. Talk about the tail waving the dog! He had a new Super-Duty, & the trailer jacknived so badly it screwed the whole back end of the truck up & ripped the reciever off the truck. We saw them get out of the truck, & called 911 & kept going, there was nothing I could do & I feared being hit by others as they came up the hill. Took 8 hours to get home, normally 5.
