Default Leap Day Storm 2-29-12

Well we are hoping for a once-in-4-year snow event but I don't think it is going to shape up that way, and I am getting a bit worried. Should have woke up to 2" of snow, with 6+ coming in today, most by noon. I am hoping that they are just off on their timing, but as of 10am we have nothing. It is a HUGE wind event, bridge escorting for sure. East winds too, which will usually dump a lot of snow on us, but it is just not here yet, and still dumping a lot downstate, and I am worried that is will play itself out before getting here. They really need to share!!
NOAA is downgrading our snow amounts already:
Quote:
Today: Snow and areas of blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 33. Windy, with a east wind between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow and freezing rain, becoming all snow after 1am. Low around 30. Breezy, with a east wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to between 10 and 15 mph. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Thursday: Snow likely before 7am. Cloudy, with a high near 34. East wind between 5 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. Calm wind.
I will keep you updated as to what we are getting.

10:45 snow is finally here. Snowing really well with 1/2 mile visibility. Grass is covered again already. BRING IT ON!

A web-cam view:

on Mackinac Island:
http://www.mackinaclive.com/index.asp?cam=0

Got 3" +/- so far in a very wet and heavy snow. It has intensified over the last 1 1/2 hour. I will take 1"/hour for the rest of the day for sure, but the radar is showing that quite a bit is passing us by .

Hoping all you guys the best for this weekend. If we're lucky, it will stay around for another week. The boys and I are coming next week to pick up the sleds. If there's snow, we'll come Thur. nite, if not, we'll just come Saturday and leave Sunday.

First wave is through and it is super windy. A very heavy wet snow is around, with drifting all over the place. I would venture we got 3-4", no way the 8"+ they were saying by now. The radar actually looks pretty decent, we may get another wave by tomorrow morning. I know people are kinda excited to see some fresh stuff, even got a call from the paper this morning.

Snow has been all done for a while, but holy wind! Wayne said there is about 5" on the Burma Grade right now, and has hit some crazy drifts out there. I still think we got around 3-4" in town. Maybe we will get more, looking at the radar, Mother Nature looks like she may be wrapping back around for us. Another 2-4 tonight would be perfect.

How is it getting out of town from the Voyager motel? Also how is the grade heading north out of town?

I'll be up Friday and Saturday (currently in Gaylord) at the Budget Host. Usually hit the Driftwood at night but am curious about Timmy Lee's as you all always head there. I've seen it from the road, but can you get there by sled?

Can't get there very well by sled. If you call Timmy's, they will have a shuttle come and get you at your hotel. I've seen Timmy come out to help brush the trails but never the owner of the Driftwood.

I agree. Timmy is a great guy and will get you there and back safely. If you come there make sure to look us up. Ask Timmy to point us out.

Understand that the local streets, and the downtown alley were all pavement this morning, so even though we got some snow, the local streets are still going to be very very thin. You have to drive pretty much all the way through town to get to a trail from the Voyager.

The grade out of town will be no problem at all, once you get under the overpass. Not sure how it is from the ice rink to the overpass yet, all the parking for pond hockey killed that area.

It is 11 PM and it is ramping back up again. Looking at another inch or so on the wrap around.

We got another inch or so last night for a storm total of around 4-5" in Iggy, a little more North of us.

Strange forecast coming in for the weekend. Local TV is talking a decent storm for Saturday morning, with between 4-8". John Dee is calling for 8-12", and NOAA and the weather channel are calling for scattered snow showers. Unfortunately, NOAA is running the best record in my opinion this year, so I guess we will see what happens. Good thing is those up to ride this weekend should have a good time on Saturday.
