Default Trail Conditions 3-07-11

I am proud to report that all of the work has paid off and rewarded with trail conditions that are about the best we have seen all season! Driver and riders both are reporting that all of our trails are in good/very good/excellent condition. Only just a couple of rather partially bare spots on the RR Grade out of Iggy on the open areas persist. We totally lost the base in those spots, so we are going to need a decent amount more snow to get them going again. Otherwise, even the rest of the Grade is in good shape. In fact, most of the persistent rocks are gone too! The rest of the trails have between 4" & 8" of well packed base, with flat highway type conditions. Just a few corners have that ice base poking through bot overall you can't complain about what we have. Toddmeister took some nice pics of the trails, so check out his post here: http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub...ead.php?t=1145

The weather forecast for our area in 3 different spots is reporting a big storm on Wednesday - by far the biggest of the season. I guess we will see, but if we do get that 10" they are predicting, then riding would not get any better period. Plan what could be the last great weekend of sledding.

Another busy weekend for me, and after the (same 'ol same 'ol) groomer show and then charity event on Saturday, I have to take the first plane to Mackinac Island on Sunday to work all day. Riding the island right now is good, everything is snow covered and smooth. Looking at the ice on the way back, if it stays cold, they may attempt to bring the ice bridge back again, as it is frozen all the way across again, with only a couple of water holes. 0-10d nights may give them another couple weeks of crossings.

While we were working downtown, firetrucks went out, which turned out to be a false alarm at Mission Point.

I will have to just agree with Neil on the trails. It has been an interesting few days. I went from last week saying "This weekend still has a chance" to holy smokes we got some snow. When we started grooming on Friday I would not have believed how good the snow stuck to the trail and formed a good base again. Saturday night it got cold and really set things up. The only disapointment that I have is on Friday while grooming up the Ozark rd I ran into a plowed trail from the east one mile of the Caffey to The Hucklberry rd south of Trout lake. We filled it in the best we could and has plenty of snow on it for now, since then I have learned that there is gonna be some logging for the next few weeks. Interesting time to start logging, and I wonder if they liked the smooth base we made for them? BUT there is still lots of good trails to ride and if it gets bad there is other directions to go around. It is great late season riding and the upcoming week looks to have seasonal temps with a chance for a big storm on Wednesday. Hopefully we can make this last a few more weeks

Well, good news is we awoke to a surprise 1 1/2"-2" of decent snow this morning. Covered all the roads again, and the plows are running.

They have downgraded the storm a bit here, with the internet saying we will be getting 4-8" and TV saying 2-6", with Iggy being right on the line of the 2-4" area. Only time will tell. Groomers are prepped, and will run tomorrow evening to get everything packed onto the trail. I see no reason that we will not have very good trails for this weekend.

Default Rode last night/ john dee

We'll see what the storm brings but as of now riding still smooth. Went out last night and there is a few open spots where the March sun got to it some, but overall still the best we have had it here all year. I thought I would share John Dee's predictions. I am really being positive for this weekend. Come on up and ride while we can. I also have some end of the season sales on clothing and acc. Thanks Wayne

Not that much in town yet. It has turned heavy-heavy wet stuff around here, so the volume is probably down a bit. I will update tomorrow with storm totals.

Just got out of the groomer! very pretty around here. Hard to tell exactly but 8 inches of fresh in spots between here and trout lake. 6 inches would cover most of it. Trails are by for the best we have had them. Only difference is we actually have loose snow on the trail and the warm temps make it harder to hold conditions. Saturday night looks to be cold again so we will have a chance to try to set things up better. The most snow I found while doing a walk around was between brevort and cut river where I could get snow up to my knees in totals. Good night and hope to see lots of people this weekend. Remember if anyone wants to park and ride from here they are welcome.

We were sitting on the left when you went by on the Burma grade. Two cats and a doo. We had a magic carpet ride all the way back to Iggy We stayed off the ribbon when possible. I agree on the snow between Brevort and Cut River.
