Default Trail Conditions 12-24-08

Happy Holidays everyone. Happy riding too.

Trails are now in excellent condition. Everything has been groomed in the last 36 hours, and there is literally no traffic out there - local or otherwise. Trails are hard packed with between 8 and 24" base, with 2-3 feet off trail.

We received several inches of fresh snow on Monday, and have 4 more today, and still snowing hard.

Limited groomer runs are scheduled for the rest of the week, which will be more then enough to handle the riders out there. Things are looking like late January riding instead of December riding out there.
Don't be afraid to head on up - you will have a great time!

I have reports of handrails being down on a bridge, on the RR Grade North of Moran. The bridge is the large Iron bridge North of the Burma grade. Please use extream caution crossing this bridge until we can get it fixed.

Note that Poker Run dates are the same as always, being the second Saturday of Jan, Feb and March. Check the post for more info.

Now how about Thursday's trail pics, a day early:

Latest info update here:

ALL of our trail are smooth and flat. Both groomers are running, and things are looking good. The forecasted rain from last night ended up being 4 more inches of heavy snow. It is now a heavy mist outside, with mid 40s and rain in the forecast for the coming days, the snow is going to take a hit - however the trails will hold just fine.

I took a bunch of time and groomed up the town trails tonight, and also opened up the US-2 business trail. Everything turned out great, and there was a couple of sleds on it before I could hit it on the return trip.

Make your new years reservations ASAP!

Neil - Thanks for all of the updates! How did things turn out after todays rain and higher temps? We're supposed to be heading up on Wednesday for 3 days, praying the conditions are going to hold up!

Was in brevort on Fri, Sat. Friday was great ton of snow and great trail conditions 250+mi, sat was very foggy with a slight mist. Still put on 80 miles in the morning, left for home at 1:30 was 51 degrees in st Ignace and the snow was going fast. Going back Tues night going to need at least 6-8in to make decent again.

Unhappy Re: Trail Conditions 12-24-08

This is the first time I have replied to this forum. My wife and I want to come up for New Year's Eve. We are from East Central Indiana. Is there still enough snow on the trails for decent sleding? We hit 66' here yesterday. It looks like they are calling for quite a bit of snow over the next several days for St. Ignace. what is your best guess. Bones

Just got off the phone with Chuck at the Rock Bottom and he says the trails are in pretty good shape. A little icy in spots but overall decent shape. Its spitting snow now and their supposed to get 6+ tonight till tomorrow. Jerry was out riding all weekend and he's reporting the same thing. They both just said should be ok to come and ride. now these reports are from Moran north. Neither one of these guys rode into St Ignace so don't know how the trails are coming out of town.

Hope this helps

Planning on coming up Wed. nite with Griz and Floyd. Unless it's not worth it. Will only be making 2, maybe 3 trips this year. Have to make them worth while.

I can faithfully report that the trails are toast - in Lansing! I just got back from 60d+ temps and green grass.

I checked trails as I came into town, and they looked just fine. Talked to a group of 6 that rode in from Newberry, and they said there was water on the trail, between Newberry and Trout Lake (didn't elaborate) - but our trails were fairly smooth all the way in. The trail in S.I. looks to still have plenty of snow on it, with some icy spots.

Overall, from my yard, I would guess we lost about 1/2 of the snow we originally had. From my drive from Lansing today (which SUCKED Gaylord North), there was no snow until I hit almost Grayling. Gaylord lost over 3/4 of their snow, but the trails may still be ridable. Indian River lost a ton, but there was still some there too.

I will get some pics, and reports from the groomers sometime tomorrow.

Thanks for the update, Neil! It's hard to believe how quickly conditions can change. Griz, Beano and myself went up to Grayling on 12/19 for the weekend and had tons of snow. You could have rode anywhere from Flint north! Even Houghton Lake had good snow, which is unusual this early in the season. I hope to hear some encouraging trail reports in S.I. - Not too crazy about having to trailer up to Castle Rock if we have to. As of now, we are still planning on coming up New Year's Eve

Lets be clear, no trailering from anywhere. You can ride from any motel, including downtown and us-2. No ice on the bay as of yet though.

Snow VP, the part of the drag from brevort that is missing is about half way to cut river on the south side of the trail, did not realise what it was untill the way back when I saw the groomer parked there. If its still there in the morining Ill grab it. Trails are all Great by the way Thanks
