Default Sleds driving across The Bridge!!

First I've heard of this - is anyone taking the opportunity?

T. IGNACE, MI - Snowmobile enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to do something that's never been done before.

The Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum in Naubinway and the St. Ignace Visitor's Bureau are teaming up to host an event in which vintage snowmobiles can be driven across the Mackinac Bridge for the first time. The event will take place from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17.

"The biggest draw is going to be the cool factor of taking you snowmobile across the Mackinac Bridge," said Quincy Westhuis, assistant director, St. Ignace Visitor's Bureau. "Literally no one has done it in the bridge's history."

Participating snowmobiles must be outfitted with wheel kits to cross the bridge, and the wheels must be at least two inches wide and have no studs or cleats. Snowmobiles must be at least 25 years old to participate.

Snowmobiles will stage in the parking lot of Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City at 9 a.m. Participants will leave their machine at this location and drive their truck and trailer to the Welcome Center at the north end of the bridge in St. Ignace.

At 10 a.m., a shuttle will transport participants from the Welcome Center in St. Ignace to their snowmobiles. The crossing begins at 11 a.m. Following the crossing, participants will have the opportunity to socialize and converse during lunch at the Mackinac Grille, 251 S State St., in St Ignace.

"There's going to be opportunity to meet people with old snowmobiles and to check out the machines," Westhuis said. "If there's snow, there's also lots of trails in the area. You can make a weekend out of it."

Driving snowmobiles across the Mackinac Bridge is prohibited. The Mackinac Bridge Authority has long provided a service to transport snowmobiles across the bridge via trailer, but self-manned machines have never crossed the bridge.

There has been plenty of interest so far, Westhuis said. A similar event involving vintage tractors held each September is extremely popular. More than 1,500 tractors participated this year.

Organizers aren't expecting a huge turnout for the first year of the event, but hope to make it an annual occasion while growing the festivities each year.

There is a registration fee of $35 per snowmobile to participate. That includes the bridge fare and lunch and awards in St. Ignace after the crossing. If you have a passenger, their cost is $30.

To register, call the St. Ignace Visitors Bureau at 906-643-6950 or 800-338-6660. Be prepared to give your name, address, phone number, email, type of snowmobile and payment information.
