Default Trail Conditions 2-15-18

Warm yesterday, warm last night and warm today is hurting us more than expected. So bad I need to downgrade from good to fair. We are losing the RR Grade from Castle Rock to North of Moran quickly. The trails in the trees are holding up, and in the open areas are getting marginal South of the Burma grade area. Ma Nature sets us up, and knocks us back down.

The good news is it is going to get cold again tonight, and then only moderate temps through the weekend. Maybe an inch of snow on Saturday night will help, but not much. The result of this will be back to crunchy and thin trails over an ice base, with ice in the corners. Early season riding again... in mid-February.

We will likely run the groomers tonight to flatten things down for teh weekend, and then again on Saturday night. Absent of more snow it will be an every 3-4 day thing for the foreseeable future.

Pond Hockey: All the rinks are made, the beer is being shipped in, and most of the hotel rooms are booked. Should be a busy weekend around Iggy.

Mackinac Island: Ice bridge treeline is up. Some sleds are crossing. Check ice conditions before crossing at your own risk. AND Mackinac Island instituted a fee to ride your sled on the island several years ago, but there has not been an ice bridge since. I have heard they are collecting, and no I don't have any other details.

Again, a big thanks to those who are covering for me in my absence.

Just a thought::

Why is Mackinaw Island able to impose a $5.00 fee to ride the Island?

What would happen if all other communities in the State decided to the same?

Because they got together with the state park and decided that they were going to do it. They researched it, and had their attorney craft and codify an ordinance and they passed it. Same way they charge $5 for you to bring you bicycle to the island (that isn't totally a ferry transport fee you pay to the boat). Probably along the same lines as the business license fee you are supposed to pay to have ordo business on the island. Mackinac Island is it's own quirky place, and sometimes you have to play by their rules to play in their yard - agree with it or don't.
Want more info? Feel free to call their City Hall, maybe their staff can explain it.

You want to go to Mackinac Island? Go for it, just be extra cool over there. DEFINITELY don't take loud pipes over. Drive 25mph or under, even in the back woods areas - there are trails all over the place for hiking and skiers and you never know where people are at. Be extra respectful. Park with some class. Take pictures. Get a hot chocolate. Maybe stay the night. Be VERY COOL around the horses. They are used to sled, but no sudden moves so you don't spook them, just maintain a slow steady forward motion when you see them, and don't drive directly at them, nor get too close. Don't give them anything to complain about, and enjoy a very surreal trip that normally only us locals see.

Agreed with everything you said about respect on the Island as I have crossed the Ice Bridge several times.

I also understand they must have adopted an ordinance, but I would the question the codification with regards to State Statutes.

But, not to start a debate, I question what will happen to the sport if all cities and villages decided to do the same?

Thank you for your response.

Groomer report from last night came in. Chris recommends not trying to Go North of Castle Rock Rd on the RR Grade, and says it is bad through Moran, for about 1 mile North.

Again, if you are going in/out of Iggy, take #471 to the West, and avoid trail #2, all the way up through Moran.

The rest of the areas he said were had, had some frozen bumps that could not be groomed out, but everything else was OK, even the pipeline. Be careful out there, it is going be icy for sure in places.

Wow that was the most traffic I have seen in our area all year. As Neil reported the RR grade to the south is not good. All other trails to the west and north are pretty good. Getting into any town is tough right now but you can make it. We did get a dusting yesterday but nothing to get excited about.

How far do we need to trailer Kenny? Trout Lake, Cut River?

It sure looks like everyone trailered to Trout Lk. I have never seen so many trailers parked at the Trading Post (gas station) and around town.

Rode from Burma North again, everything was very good. Some pavement riding getting thru any towns, including Trout Lk, but made it thru there both Sat and Sun. We trailered from camp to Rudyard Groomer Barn and made North and South Loops. Did a lot of off trail / forest roads to avoid the traffic. Traffic was really bad UP North a bit (Brimley)

We rode out of Brevort. Getting to the trailhead very thin, I would trailer to the trailhead if there is no new snow.

Unless the forecast changes dramatically, we're going to head to Munising for the weekend. I know it will be packed but for craps sake, I've only ridden two weekends this year. This may be Mark's last weekend to ride. I am planning on coming UP again in two weeks but the way it's been this year, that's a crap shoot.

I'm not giving up on March just yet.

The most expensive sled I've ever bought in my 40 years of riding and it's been the worst winter I can remember.

BLAME IT ON ME!!!!

Did you park by the fuel tank Kenny?

AllSeason and I also parked down at the trailhead. A quick comment...some people do not know how to park at the trailhead correctly

West and North trails were all in nice shape. It was very busy from Trout Lake up to Brimley.

Saw a few groups on the Caffey also.

Yes Todd that was me at the fuel tank. Someone had blocked the turn around at the end so I just parked in front of Pats house.
