Default Trail Conditions 2-23-18

I have been out of town for the last week again so had no idea what was happening trail-wise around here. I am back in Iggy agina nd made a few calls and this is what I know:

It is raining here right now and melting more then I would have thought.
Getting around town is pretty tough. The RR Grade going out to Moran is either bare or ice. Castle Rock Rd is all ice.

Our North & West trails are in surprisingly good condition. The Western groomer has run twice this week and said the trails had some ice on them but were pretty flat and snow covered, with no major issues to report.

The trails South of Moran again the RR Grade is shot, and the others have a very good base of ice, but would not be good riding right now.

The forecast has wet sloppy stuff for Saturday night, and then next week slightly above freezing temps. It is going to be a crap shoot if we have decent trails next weekend.

I know it isn't a ton of info, but it is what I have right now. Good luck and happy trails.

I talked to a group that ran part of our trails yesterday. Their report was that everything was is quite good conditions with a fresh 3" in Trout Lake area. Everything they ran on the Northern end was some of teh best trails they ran all day which included a trip up to Shirley's.

For those that wonder about such things, the high winds of Sunday Feb 25 blew the remains of the Mackinac Island ice bridge away. It is now open water nearly all the way across, but probably enough ice in the Mackinac Island harbor to prevent the ferry from running for a time. A few machines were still crossing on Saturday, but they had to work around cracks and bad spots.

It has remained cold around here, so the snow, where it remains, is still hard and icy, but the roads and un-sheltered trails are bare. My yard still has 6-12" of snowpack here in town, despite the rain and sun.

The next forecast snow for the area isn't until Monday/Tuesday March 5-6, but that far out the forecast is unreliable. Too many times the snow dissipates or misses us completely.
