Default Trail Conditions 12-26-16

Merry Christmas, hope that it was a good one for you and your loved ones.

The Christmas storm did blow through with stiff winds, and basically rain. The snow pack was reduced by half, that is not saying much for the little that we have. The roads are covered with ice today, and the trails are saturated, and will be ice by tomorrow morning. Today is progressing towards sunny and 43d, so you can expect everything to melt some, settle down more, and then refreeze like a sheet of ice. Mid-season I would send the groomers out to lay everything flat before the re-freeze, but there just isn't enough out there to begin with, so we have to hope that it is flat enough now, and the ya-hoos stay off it while it is this soft.

The good news is the base will be set for teh season by morning, and all we will need is a few inches of snow to get things rolling again. Bad news is for yet another hell week, there will be very little snow from Christmas to New Years. While you probably could go out and ride some, I would not recommend it, and it would be crazy without some studs.

We will need more snow before I can recommend riding any. I will get some out trail pics in the coming days, and let you know just how well the woods held up. Stay optimistic, and watch the forecast as it will not take much snow.

As of today though, the 26th, if you are traveling, please please be super careful no matter where you are. Black ice rules the conversation, roads are closed, and even teh Bridge is closed today for falling ice. I expect it will reopen by this evening but check if you are planning a trip.

CRUNCHY

Everything is froze back up again today. Slick, and icy for the most part. Give us 3-4" of decent snow and we will give you great trails. Just need a little help out there now from Mother Nature - that 'ol tease.

No change. ICY. Moran area is just teh same as Iggy. We are all set, all we need it 3-4" of snow and will be rocking.

Forecast for less then an inch tomorrow night. Friday a clipper is coming through with potential of 3-5" in Mackinac County. That would be what we need.

I'll keep you posted.

Just a small skiff of snow in Iggy last night. Trout Lake got about 2" over teh last few days. Trails are very icy but ridable from Newberry - Rexton - (caffey) - Trout Lake. South of there is more icy yet, but a great base waiting for some decent snow.

Another December with very low groomer milage.

Good morning all. Sorry I have been slacking on giving you a report so here it is. We are staying on Brevort lake so I don't know anything about from here to town but heading north is ok. We went to Grand Maris yesterday via Rexton. Trail is rideable but not great. We rode the caffey and there is no dirt or rocks showing. That being said a lot of traffic and it would be gone quick. Once you get to Newberry things start looking up. It snowed all day yesterday our entire trip. We ended up the trip yesterday in Trout lake. Do not take the tasa swamp trail from Rexton to T.L. . The truck trail coming back was ok. Some dummy drove his truck on it for about the first 2 miles so we have ruts but after that just icy. If you were riding without studs you need to be careful. Now last night we got a good 3-4 inches of snow but it's all light lake effect. It is currently snowing and our sleds are covered from the night and we got in around midnight. Also if riding the caffey be careful there is still a bunch of wood down. I picked up a ton but there is still more. Nothing major but limbs laying around.

Nice meeting you lowersnow goer!

Nice write-up Kenny. I'll be headed up with my son today, so it's nice to know that we can at least take a short loop out of Brevort.

Well just got back today. Strongs got over a foot last night. Things are good to the north. The snow we got helped our trails but not a bunch. The snow was all light sugar snow. We are supposed to get some system snow tonight. Let's hope!
Looks like a munsing trip tomorrow😄

Yep - they are plowing the roads but you can still get down them right now. We will loose them quickly in a extended warmup.
USFS personnel in charge of that operation are on vacation until the 9th.
