Default Club Work Project - Tree Planting.

Saturday May 2nd at 9am meeting at the Ice rink in St. Ignace.

We have a grant and have purchased 1250 trees to plant along the trail in the troubled open area between Cheeseman Road and Castle Rock Road. We hope that eventually these seedlings will for a wind and sun barrier and keep this section of trail in better shape in low snow years.

Anyone interested in helping out is free to post up here, message or call me.

With 8-10 crews we hope this can be done is around 3 hours, and lunch will be provided.

Well boys, those trees were bad trees, and they should have known to grow in a better location - one that would preserve their lives.

These will be good trees, and be planted to shade the trail, and provide a wind and snow break. I hope once they are established, they will extend our riding season out of Iggy by an average of 2 weeks. We lost a full month this season on that portion of trail - time to do something about it.

Would like to help out, but we are modeling the bathroom and new windows in the house. It all takes time and $$.
Hope you can get the job done.

Things went great. A big shout out to the folks from the North Country Trail Assn who sent a few out to help out. Groomer Dave brought a couple of kids, and Ryscamp brought the RTV and a couple kids from Grand Rapids too.

We got started around 9:30am, had a great sandwich lunch and finished up planting 1200+ trees by 1:30. We covered the whole open area between Castle Rock and Cheeseman Roads, and had some trees left, so covered about 1/2 of the open area at Hay lake too, just North of Castle Rock Rd.

The trees were about 1/2 the size as advertised, but I guess we will see if we see something to help out in the next couple of years. It may take 5-8 years to get anything really useful, but you have to start somewhere I guess, and it was not that big of a $$ commitment from the Club. A big thank you to Consumers Energy, and Michigan International Speedway, who through their grant program donated 500 white pines. The club purchased the remainder of 500 cedar and 250 spruce.
