The access to the Ice Bridge is at the Mackinac Bar & Grill across the street from the downtown Shell Station.

There is a trail on the backside of town behind the business district that brings you out right at the Shell Station.

This didn't seem to be a problem until last year, so don't know what changed, but people need to help get the word out - or darwin will just thin the herd I guess.

Always cross on the designated treeline, and always check the local ice conditions.

Earlier that morning:
I thought it was a little strange that the Anderson was in the straits this time of year. Here is an article about her latest voyage. Within 2 weeks we will see regular transits by the Mackinaw and other cutters prepping for the scheduled opening of the locks. They will work the straits and river to the Soo heavily before the official opening.

So with the warm weekend, the ice is showing some ware. There is still no open water, but I have heard the airplane alot this morning, meaning construction workers are commuting. I am guessing the ice bridge will not last but a few more days - if it is even good right now. It is not in a condition for tourist traffic, so if you are not very good with knowing ice conditions, time to steer clear.

Well open water here between Iggy and Mac Island. I am told that the last snowmobile to Mac was on Tuesday March 24th. The Coast Guard was out in force breaking up the channel a few times since, with reports of over 3 feet of ice out there. Another good year with ice bridge traffic!
