Default Trail Conditions 3-03-14

We are entering the last official month of sledding season, but I truly believe that riding in April (or May) is not a possibility, but a certainty.

Trails are really in fantastic shape again. We have everything flat hard and have most of the areas even the big curves widened out nicely. We somehow got a few decent sized rollers out on the RR Grade in certain areas. They are long enough for the groomer to drive down into so we are having a heck of a time getting rid of them since the base is so hard. Its gonna be a work in progress, but gonna have to live with them for the most part for the time being. Heck they may even be kinda fun to ride at speed.

It was a cold one out for sure, but it seemed like everyone enjoyed the Ice Chip Golf out on Lake Huron. Cheboygan Brewing Co. provided a great product to get everyone into the golfing mood.

So, I don't wanna have to point this out, but there are only 4 official sledding weekends left. Pick your dates and make your plans - spring will be here (in like 3 months).

Here is some delayed trail candy from over the weekend. Check out these fantastic views from the Castle Rock Rd

OK, so I had some schedule conflicts and could not get the town trail groomed up at the end of last week. Sorry about the rough town trail folks. So on my way back in yesterday afternoon I wanted to at least jump through the Chain Lake trail as Griz told me there were a couple drifts on it, like 4' tall and it was kinda tough to get through. OK I will take a quick trip through and blast it open.... boy was I wrong! That is the absolute worst I have ever seen that trail, and the worst thing is the snow was like concrete, super hard to move.

So I made my way in, and it was going pretty good, except the side of the drift gave away and I almost took out the fence. The other option was to dump it over the 4' drop into the Lake, also not a good option. After working things back and fourth a bit, I lost the drag onto the Lake side, and decided that I had to unhook - always a pain.

After working the area for another 40 minutes with just the tractor, it was time to just grade the drag with a chain and get out of there and try another plan. A huge thank you to George's Body Shop for the use of their loader. Even that had a bit of a tough time digging through that drift. After a couple f hours I got things cleaned back up, and we will be good to go for the rest of the season.

Kinda funny that just Friday I had offered to go over the bridge and help out the Cheboygan club for just this situation, and I am the one that ended up getting a loader!

Yeah Cheboygan club was out on the north end of trail 720 (IR to Cheboygan) working sat morning. One of their tractors had a large snowblower on the back instead of the drag.

There was a two mile section with 4-6 ft drifts. They were blowing the snow off the trail. We stopped briefly to chat with the driver, he said way too much snow to deal with in the heavy drift areas. Their tractors have no front blades, only front loader buckets. Their other tractor with the drag would then come thru to flatten out the mess afterwards.

It was a cold weekend for riding that's for sure...

I hear ya, Todd! We took off out of Iggy Friday morning around 9:30 (waited for it to warm up, haha) and it was -8. I think it might have gotten up to 10. Saturday wasn't any warmer, but at least the sun was shining. Other than being a little chilled, it was a beautiful weekend of riding. And as usual, the trails were absolutely fantastic. Great job Neil, and thanks to Griz for sacrificing your social activities Saturday night to Doo sum grooming.
