Trail Closed near Detour
Section of Cranberry Lake ORV/snowmobile trail in Chippewa County temporarily closed
Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials announced today that a short section of the Cranberry Lake ORV trail/snowmobile trail #47, located in southeastern Chippewa County, has temporarily closed due to removal of the Cranberry Lake Wildlife Flooding dam.
The section of closed ORV and snowmobile trail is located between South Caribou Lake Road and State Highway M-134. The trail will remain closed until a temporary bridge can be installed for the winter season. DNR Parks and Recreation Division trail supervisors hope to reopen the trail before the end of December. (a map close to the area is here: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=East+...49725&t=m&z=14)
DNR Wildlife Division staff permanently removed the Cranberry Lake Wildlife Flooding dam to address critical safety issues and the stream channel will be restored to its natural flow. Although removal of the dam leaves the area temporarily inaccessible by motorized vehicle, hunters and other members of the public may still access the area on foot.
For more information regarding the trail closure, contact DNR recreation specialist Dan Moore at 906-293-5131. For information about the dam removal or wildlife flooding area, contact DNR wildlife biologist David Jentoft at 906-635-6161.
