Trail Conditions 4-09-18

Yes, trail conditions on teh second week of April, when we had a pathetic year is just crazy. Mild temps over the weekend have kept the core of our system in OK shape. I did not check this morning, but I am going to guess we have a couple miles of RR Grade South of Moran that are in rough shape. And other then teh full sun corners out there, the rest of the system should be in rideable March condition shape until we get rain mid-week.

So, that leave a few extra days of riding and it will be over when we get teh rain/40s mid week right? MAYBE NOT! A huge storm system is developing for the coming weekend that just may turn the entire UP back into rideable conditions. I know this is a long term out there forecast, but one model is showing 20-30" of new snow for the West UP ,a dn 18-20" for us! It will be 50-60 degrees downstate and 30s and a blizzard in the UP.

You may not want to sumerize that sled just yet, after the biggest seasons snow we had last week, we may double or triple that amount this coming weekend.

You are all good on the Straits trails. We usually recommend avoiding the Cedarville connector however.

Hey Neil,
Thank you for the informative posts thru the year.
I am watching the weather and if they are correct I would like to come up sometime the 13th thru the 15th and hope to stay in St. Ignace and ride from there. Any chance you will be grooming? Please advise and Thank You again for all the info you provide !!

Curious - why is that? Truck traffic or the low areas along Mac Tr? Was planning on heading over from that way this weekend. Trail plenty wide from Mac Tr to 123.

Cedarville Trail along the side of Mac Trail usually unsable in low snow conditions. Also, they like to plow the East Lake Road portion really hard. With the typically lower numbers of riders going that way, and the wait for Cedarville to groom to us due to open swamps it is always the last trail we bring on-line. I won't groom the hell out of that trail if it doesn't connect to anything.

There is just no way this 10 day GFS model can be right.
If it is we will be digging out out for days.

Thanks ... I can understand the 'not grooming' was just wondering if there was something else. We can get thru there without grooming, but wanted to make sure there wasn't a hazard or something I wasn't aware of.

If you are asking that we will be grooming? That is very unlikely.

However, the forecasts are still fluctuating a decent amount, but it may be shaping up to be an epic storm! Remember you don't have to ride a gromoed surface, come up and ride our ungroomed trails, some of the most fun I have ever had was busting powder down a regular trail!

Things could change, but with the storm coming in over the entire weekend, (it would be 5 days of melting for people to schedule another weekend trip) the fatigue of a long season, and not getting compensated by the DNR, I just can't see us running machines again.

So the are still holding the snow amounts for this area.

Right now I question the amount that will be on the ground though. Sure, it may snow 12" in a 24hr period, but it is also forecasted to be pretty warm, so if it is melting on contact, then the storm total will be high but the effect will be ho-hum.

Only time will tell, first 3-day storm of the season for sure.
