We will be up riding in the area shortly and I had a few questions. I have only been riding the trails for a 3 seasons gaining some experience. I rode before that on our land with a very old snowmobile and have ridden ATV's for years... Anyway, I have made a trip to the Soo from Hessel but I would like to ride west and check out that direction.
The trails right by my place are small and tight and my buddies and I would like some more open trails. I hear you guys talk about the rail beds but I do not know which section it is on the map.
1. When I cross I75 which way should I go to get on some wide and open type trails to head towards fuel?
My goal this year is to ride to Trout Lake, Strongs, Kinross, and back to Hessel. I know all the fuel stops in the Soo, Kinross, and Cedarville.
2. Do I need to worry about fuel with that route or will it not be an issue? I do not have my details area map with me, it's at the house.
If that works well early in the trip, maybe on to whitefish point, but that needs more planning.

The trail from St. Ignace to Trout Lake is 30 miles of RR Grade. Then go on to Strongs and from there it is another RR Grade to the Soo. Roughly 90 miles from St. Ignace to the Soo. You can get gas in Moran, Trout Lake or Strongs on the way.
If you are going to Paradise, you will turn just before Raco. Not sure about fuel after that point. Raco no longer has fuel. If you gas up at Trout Lake or Strongs after St. Ignace, you will make the Soo or Paradise with no problem.
Just re-read your thread. If you're riding from Hessel, you'll catch the trail north of Moran on the west side of I-75.
Go to fishweb.com and you can see a map.

OK, so once I get to where 47 and 2 meets and turn north (on 47) it will be on the RR grade and be fast riding up to Trout Lake. Thats cool...
It looks like I can hit the trail just north of Trout Lake to head towards Kinross (good food at the Malamute) and back home...
Thanks!

Jason,
Yep- just head on over from Cedarville, and keep following the trail. Once you come to I-75 the second time is when the trail really improves. You will foll that #47 trail, across the red creek road until you come to a T intersection at the RR grade, trail #2. You can turn left (south) for 3 mile and gas at Moran) Or turn right, (north) and on to Trout Lake. That stretch is all RR grade, and is straight and you will usually find traffic. If you want a nicer ride to Trout Lake, continue on #2 after your right turn for about 3 miles, to a T intersection at the Burma grade. Cross M-123 and follow that super wide and fast road for 4-5 miles, continue through a T intersection with trail 471 to the South, the trail narrows here a bit, go another 2-3 miles to a T intersection. South here for 5 miles will bring to into Brevort for food or gas, or North here and follow up the carp river truck trail to a T intersection to the left (to Rexton) through that intersection to a dead end and T intersection at a plowed road. Turn right on the huckleberry road and go for about 2 miles, and you will again find yourself at the RR grade, and only 2 miles South of Trout Lake.
I know the kind of trails you are referring to in Cedarville, and you can take the RR grade to Trout Lake, but truthfully, it is going to me a bit narrow with all the snow on the trees. You will enjoy the other ride much more, and it will only add maybe 20 minutes to your trip. See our main page for all the maps you need around this area, download and print as many as you like!
Welcome to the Straits Club Trails, you will defiantly enjoy!
**I am sorry if the Cedarville connector trail is a bit bumpy, I am down a couple of experienced driver right now, and that trail is only groomed twice a week. I hope to have it groomed Friday Night though.**

I'm coming up Friday - Wednesday. Off trail on Saturday and Sunday, planning the trail rides on Monday and Tuesday. Should have less traffic and nicer trails. Thanks for your help everyone!

All right, headed up again on 2/20, I'm so pumped. Have not had many opportunities to ride this year.
Neil, any chance the Cedarville connector will be groomed and ready for us on Thursday morning?
:p
Just kidding, I'm sure everything will be great as long as the weather holds steady!
Brian, you ready to ride Thursday morning bright and early? Can you fire up the heater in the garage about 8pm so I can replace my slides and wear bars?
We rode towards Cedarville Saturday and the trail started out great. When we got close to Cedarville, the snow started getting thin. Turned back around. They need some more over there before I go back.

Wink, any water on that trail? Someone told me they talked to you and that whole trail was in rough shape.
A couple weeks ago we ran into some water. Saw some again in the same spot only not as bad. It's easy to get around now. It's a real swampy section around some power lines. We really didn't go that far before we thought the snow was too thin.

I usually skip past the first part by the power lines (when going east)...
