Special Weekend Edition!

I'm usually too busy to get on during the weekend, but here I am.
Talked to a few groomer drivers, and a few sleds out there today, and this pretty much sums it it: Rough and Tough !

Did every person on this board conspire to bring all of their friends up here today? I had no idea that the ice rink parking lot could come close to holding OVER 100 trailers, but it was packed in there today! Most motels in the area were full as of 7pm today, and there are sleds every were.

I'll explain, so lets drop back to Thursday. The SI groomer went out late Thursday afternoon, and completed its run around midnight. It did not sit long, and Fridays run was actually done before 7am! It has been just above freezing (34d-36d)for the last 4 days up here, and the trails are taking a beating. Heavy traffic took it toll on the trails, and by Friday afternoon we were getting reports that the RR Grade was thrashed. A couple of the guys did not like hearing that, so Groomer Keith, and Groomer Jim K. conspired together, and they scheduled extra grooms. The SI machine went out at 5pm on Friday and has only stopped for 3 hours since! They teamed up and have been switching in-out of that machine every 8 hours or so, and in fact that machine is heading to Trout Lake as I type, driven by the President, Jim DeKeyser! And as usual, groomer Dave is running his machine out of Brevort this evening.

Now to add to all this, in an impossible coincidence, both machines ripped their 3 point hitches off last night, in separate incidents. One was probably metal fatigue, an the other was a dispute with a tree stump. Groomer Dave hit the stump on his run, way on the North end. He was able to improvise a hook-up to the stiff hitch, and actually groom his way to St. Iggy for repairs, although with less control than normal. Can you believe this guy? He could have dropped drag, and ran the roads into town, but he grooms his way in, typical Dave. The other break thankfully happened right at the ice rink right after a driver swap, so repairs did not take long. Both machines were only down for a matter of hours.

I went out and fixed the iron bridge today, and also repaired the fuel pump station in Brevort. I ran into the president Jim D. on the way back, just North of Moran. These temps and heavy traffic are turning the center of the trails into mush. The groomers are leveling things out as fast as they can, but it does not take many sleds to destroy the trails with these conditions. I can tell you this, the groomer drivers were pissed that the trails got tore up on Friday, and I fully expect the machines to run almost non-stop for the rest of the weekend. Now mind you, we already have 4 extra grooms this weekend, and it is only Saturday. When it does finally get down to freezing, things whould be in great shape.

So, sorry things are bumpy folks, we are working on it!

Well, with the warm weather on Friday and heavy traffic, the trails took a beating. However, a bit of fresh snow fell overnight into Saturday morning.

We trailered over to Brevort this morning and went to Cut River Inn for lunch. Met Kenny and his family, great to meet you Kenny (conniver04)! See ya next weekend at da poker run.

Trails were a bit rough in the morning, but the Groomers were sighted during the afternoon as you can see here. The first pic was near the "restroom" at the ORV parking area.

The Burma grade was sweet after the groomer passed!!!! See second pic.

The last pic was the Brevort groomer heading back north after fueling up and changing drivers????
He was headed to CutRiver.

We did some more off trail riding today and went to the CutRiverBridge. See my other post for pics of that in the Area Info section: http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub...read.php?t=126 (http://www.straitsareasnowmobileclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=126)

Well we just made it back home. Wow what a drive from the bridge all the way to west branch. They had the freeway closed at exit 290 and sent us the back roads to gaylord. what a mess.

Well on to better things we rode out of town to cut river and met Todd(toddmeister) and his wife. It was a pleasure meeting you and we are also looking forward to this weekend's poker run with ya. Well the rr grade was a bit tore up until castle rock rd and after that it was pretty smooth other than a few rough spots. From there we decided to go towards naubinway and curtis and that ride was not that bad but after that we headed toward newberry and all He** broke loose. I mean we went 35+ miles in no less than 3 foot moguls. Fimally on the way home we came off trail 2 to the grade and ran into the groomer and boy was that a great sight. All in all not a bad weekend buit I will say this to all you groomer drivers for our club: Reach around and give yourself a big pat on the back because our trails were in the best condition than any other trail I rode on Sat and we rode over 200 miles.
I will also tell ya that at every stop we talked to other people about where they were going and everyone had a great compliment about our trail system when I told them we rode out of St. Ignace so all your hard work is DEFINATLY paying off big. Great job!

Well sorry to be so long winded and hope to see everyone next weekend at the poker run.

haha...you guys got detoured too???? we must have been right behind you. anyway, we also went up this weekend. i'll agree with the groomer, it was rough and tough. BUT, i think it could have been a lot worse. There were just so many people up there this weekend. we got there at 9:30 and we had to park at the ice arena. that never happens. keep up the good work groomers....and THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks for the info Neil...

I headed out of Cut River @ 6:30am Saturday morning and by the time I hit the "T" from Brevort I was inventing a new language. It was rough. My 16 year old son asked me why we got up so early to ride when the trails were as rough as they would be at 4pm. :help_wsig

I told him something wasn't right. Your post explains it, broken groomers and a TON OF FRIDAY traffic with warm temps. Receipie for trail disaster.

We did come across the groomer Saturday about 7:30am heading east off the RR grade going toward the Red Creek bridge. FWIW, my son & I pulled a dead deer carcass off the trail that runs next to the road, so the groomer driver wouldn't have to stop and do it. It was fresh road kill, probably 2 hours earlier hit by a car, and only there long enough for the crows to just get started on it. Boy were they ticked about us touching thier breakfast

Now the ride back to Cut River at 3:30pm and 200 miles later was expected. WOW! Was it bad, but, it was Saturday and it was warm. Makes for BIG MOGULS. But these things have suspensions for a reason. And I used all of it.

Since I have groomed in the past, and have ridden sleds for 20+ years, I don't automatically blame the groomers. They CARE! I knew something was up and it's all clear now. :cool2: THANKS TO ALL THE PEOPLE TRYING HARD TO SMOOTH THINGS OUT!

Ah, yes...the 284 Mile Marker accident and I-75 Road Closure. IT STUNK!!! I was at the 286, stuck in it. Finally the MSP was having everyone turn around and head north, cross over to the NB lane and up to 290. Added 2.0hrs to my trip home. :censored:

Thanks for helping out with the deer! One of the drivers said he saw fresh blood, and was worried that a sled hit it  Sounds like no one got hurt, and that it what we want to hear. FYI I am starting the process of getting that trail either re-routed or moved out of the ditch.

Also, thanks to the several people who stopped and offered assistance to me while I was repairing the iron bridge Saturday. Most snowmobilers are good deep down and it is nice to hear.

Yeah, what a ride home....also got turned around about 285, we headed back north to Indian River, took 68 east to 33 and headed south from there. Jumped back to I-75 at West Branch (needed diesel fuel). The Atlanta area had a foot of fresh snow. Very little traffic except for plows and graders on 68/33 down to Mio. Much better than the I-75 skating rink. Also added about 2 hours to the drive...Whew!!!!

That detour added atleast 2 hours to our drive. Does anyone know what happened?

Some clown with a sled in the back of his truck was driving about 20mph to fast for the road conditions. Took out another truck pulling a trailer with sleds. Destroyed the other truck, the fool was pulled out by a wrecker and continued on his way, leaving a HUGE mess behind him.

That's the story I got from the poor victim with the other truck.

He needs a little :censored: :censored: :censored:

Beagle, thanks for the reply. Sounds like this guy created quite a mess.

On a different note I was telling my wife about the guy from CA writing that article about lazy snowmobiliers and after this weekends ride and how sore she is today I'm sure she will have some nice comments for Mr. curtis and how Lazy we snowmobiliers are.LOL
