If it opens you have got to ride it. It's a once in a lifetime experience. I did it a few years ago.

The boat was running yesterday, but had a difficult time and will be done any day now. I will report when the tree line is up - nothing more.

By the way, the 3 first crossers were on the front page of the paper this week.
http://www.stignacenews.com/
I really don't like the amount of press this is getting right now as being open and safe. The picture caption says that they found between 3 1/2 and 6" of ice out there. The ice bridge tree line is farther South then I have ever seen it, taking basically the route the ferries take to the island, not a straight shot over.
People are crossing daily. Just remember crossing frozen water of any depth is never 100% safe.

Better not stop on only 3 1/2 inches.

I've never seen ice shanties under the bridge.
I think what you're seeing in that picture is the shadow of the bridge. Look how long the shadows from the cars are. Sun is very low in the east.

There are several shanties on the inland lakes.
They are in the process of clearing the snow for Pond Hockey in Moran Bay,
several trucks with plows on them.
Lookin good !!! :fight[1]:

Anyone know how thick the ice is?? Want to head over to the island in about 2 weeks, anysuggestions for hotels on the island just me and my wife.
Snow VP
02-02-2011, 05:25 PM
Have not heard Ice thickness since the first trip. Doesn't matter much as it could change quite a bit in 2 weeks.
Hotels on the Island? Not much open this time of year. Maybe the VI, can't think of another that would be open. Call their Chamber.

Just a quick question where can you ride once you get to the island? I have heard different things, and I have never been there in the winter.

Most roads, and maybe 1/4 of the trails. Speed limits apply, be cool and you will be OK.

Anybody been across the Ice Bridge today? We are heading up tomorrow, and hoping there will be some ice left. I've heard mixed reports elsewhere. I figured you guys here would have the straight story.
Any info is much appreciated.

Still people crossing as of yesterday. Stop at the 'entrance' to the ice bridge, and wait for someone to cross if you are unsure of conditions. I heard there was plenty of ice out there, but stay on the bridge.

Huge winds around here this weekend/ today. I heard from 1 person that a large pressure crack developed off the dock in St. Ignace, but have not heard much about it since. All the ice was gone off the North end of the island over the weekend, but it is all back today from driving winds. I don't know if people are crossing or not.

Nope. However they really are not sure where he went. It is not clear that he was heading to the mainland, or was already here.

Lots of open water between the mainland and the island. So much for the ice bridge this year, but it was nice while we had it. from facebook

You HAVE to get there next winter. It's a great time. Not many businesses open but you can have lunch over at the Village Inn. You can ride up to the Grand Hotel (no charge to walk on the porch like in the summer). You can ride right downtown, up by the fort and all the way around the island if there's enough snow. Here's a couple from late January of this year:
